A Lesson in Sustainability

For today's post we visit the garden of my dear friend Alison. You have got to check out the good stuff growing in her backyard!

She's growing a feast of vegetables. I saw peppers, cucumbers, tomatos, zucchini, spinach, and all sorts of herbs. I'm sure there's more hiding in there waiting to bloom later in the season.

So many tomatos will be coming ripe at the same time. She'll have plenty to can and freeze her delicious recipes. When I went to visit her for lunch, the majority of our meal came straight from her garden.

A surprise visitor in her flower pot!
Today much of our food comes from other parts of the US, or it is shipped internationally to arrive at our dinner plate. By the time we consume our food, the food itself has taken more energy to transport than it is worth in calories! Its important for each of us to do what we can to conserve our natural energy resources, whether it be turning off our air conditioners when we aren't home, or eating locally. I thought her garden was the best example of living a sustainable lifestyle; you can't get more locally grown than making delicious vegetables from the sunshine that hits your yard. It doesn't get much better than that.
