Wrapping Up
My supervisor at work baked a batch of double-fudge cookies in honor of my last week of work. There was a lot of whispering in the office (we all work in a small 15x15 space), and out comes from the back room this plate of cookies with "Break a Leg" written on them in icing, complete with a candle! They are so sweet. I've been working with them on and off for the past five years, in between college and traveling, taking on theater jobs and growing through my early 20s.
I'm really going to miss them. In retrospect, these people know me pretty well. I come into work ready to share whatever story is on my brain. Much to my surprise, even staff from outside of my immediate office have caught wind of my upcoming move and have wished me luck on my journey.
Here's what I am learning: people are intrinsically nice - if you are receptive. In the past I've had my blinders up, too insecure to interact with strangers. But you know what? Life is too short not to appreciate the people thrown into the mix around you. You never know what kind of adventure or laughs you might find reaching out.
Look closely: the center of this drink is on fire. |
Tonight my friend and I happened upon a Chinese restaurant down the street from my apartment that I've been walking past all year. After ordering the most ridiculous flaming drink (yes, literally on fire) on the menu, we made friends with the owner, and as we were leaving, he very sincerely shook my hand and wished me luck in New York.
Yeah, 3 points team human connection!
