The Thrifty Actor: Part VI

Who's got the keys to my Beemer? No really? Who?
How to Travel Cheaply

Especially as a regional actor, I find myself pining away at auditions several hundred miles away. Quick solution?

Take the Bus

Megabus is my favorite bus line, offering many bus routes on the east coast, and if you are traveling to NYC, these buses run all day. If you book several weeks in advance, you might snag a trip for $1, although average bus trips are around $15/each way. Buses are now equipt with spotty, although free Wi-Fi Internet and power outlets to help you pass the time. Sign up for their email newsletter and facebook fan page to receive promo codes. Right now they are giving away 200,000 free trips from January-March. Use promocode WOW200k at checkout.

Bolt Bus is very similar to Megabus in price and perks.

If you are from the suburbs of Washington, DC you might enjoy Vamoose Bus, which leaves from Bethesda, MD and Arlington,VA. Their ticket prices are higher, but saves you a metro trip downtown.

Take the Train

Amtrack usually has student or AAA discounts. If you are in a union, check your website for current discount codes.

Renting Cars

Through Actor's Equity, you can get 10% off at Enterprise. Also check to see if you can combine with AAA discounts!

Gasoline

Enter your Giant club card phone number at participating Shell gas stations for money off your gas! I got $0.40 off/per gallon last week.

Deduct it, Baby

Remember to keep all receipts pertaining to your travel in search of work so you can deduct it on your taxes at the end of the year. You cannot deduct gas but you can deduct mileage, so be sure to keep a calendar with your auditions and their locations with you.
